Dec. 9, 2024 – The Cedar Rapids Public Library is made possible by our incredible staff. And we are staffed by book lovers. To celebrate the people who keep our library running, we're highlighting different staff members and books they love.

Amy is a Programming Librarian who started working at the library in February 2023. Programming Librarians put on events from story times to book clubs to Summer Reading park visits and everything in between. They also help patrons use the technology in the Maker Spaces and do community outreach, taking the library to area classrooms, preschools, and beyond.

"The best part of my job is connecting patrons with their interests and new learning opportunities through library programs and outreach events," Amy said. "Whether I'm going to read and work on early literacy skills at preschools or teaching patrons how to sew or use our 3D printers in a Maker Appointment, I love sharing knowledge and skills with everyone in our community."

"Hall of Smoke" (The Four Pillars series) by H.M. Long

The lore in this Viking-inspired fantasy series is deep for a relatively short series thus far. The female protagonist is a fierce warrior priestess whose story of discovery feels refreshingly different despite some familiar elements.

"Heartstopper" (series) by Alice Oseman

A beautiful story of self-discovery, this graphic novel series makes for a wonderful cozy read that will also tug on readers' heart strings.

"Nestlings" by Nat Cassidy

A creeping horror novel that builds heavy tension in the beginning and intrigue throughout.

"Skyward" (series) by Brandon Sanderson

This sci-fi series is geared towards a YA audience, though the themes and topics explored will be equally enjoyed by some adults. I very much enjoyed this easy read paired with the humor, drama, and excitement of an space opera.

"Just Like Home" by Sarah Gailey

I found this slow-to-start psychological horror story a compelling read that explores family relationships and the repercussions of 'true crime' as entertainment.
