Meet the Cedar Rapids Public Library staff

This week we’re introducing Patron Services Specialist Elysha Holley, who goes by Lysh, as part of our series on the employees who make the Library great. Lysh started at the Cedar Rapids Public Library in July 2018 and primarily works Downtown.

What does your job typically include?

I am in direct contact with patrons, assisting them with their questions, helping them locate items in the building, or answering information about their account. I also guide them through using our technology, such as our online databases, the copier, fax machine, computers, or microfilm.

What made you want to work here?

I have always enjoyed working directly with people and helping others. I knew I would be a perfect fit here.

What’s your favorite part about working here?

I love it when I get to spend one-on-one time with a patron, coming up with solutions to what brought them in.

Do you have any moments or stories from the Library that stand out that you would want to share with patrons?

A young father came in with his very young son needing copies of his immigration paperwork. He didn’t realize the copy machine wasn’t free, so he said he would be back as soon as he could. Seeing him with his hands full of papers and a restless young child, I told him not to worry about the cost and a second trip. I made all his copies while he held his child. Being there for our patrons when they are in need of a moment of kindness is what makes coming to work so rewarding.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I enjoy playing the piano on my baby grand, trying new restaurants in town, and watching movies.

What’s your favorite book genre? Why?

My favorite book genre is dystopian fiction. I find it fascinating to read how life and society could be in these alternate realities.

Do you have a favorite book or author? What do you like about them?

My favorite book series is Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. I love how she brought an entire magical world to life, right down to small details such as creating bedtime stories for young wizards and witches to throwing deathday parties for ghosts who roam Hogwarts.

If you could pick a superpower, what would it be?

I would love to have telekinesis, the power to move objects with my mind. I would use this power to help friends move furniture.
